"Magic" Dear readers, I feel Christmas creeping up on me. It's the time of year where Disney continues to takeover and endless repeats of The Grinch, Shrek and Harry Potter takeover our tv screens. I'm dead serious, this is what I watch every year and I've passed that on to the kids. I was supposed to attend an early screening of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald, but I had to postpone due to a prior engagement. That doesn't mean I will not celebrate though. I grew up fascinated with the wizarding world. I never got to see the first Harry Potter in theaters, but when it was released on dvd, my dad bought it for me at Kmart and we all watched it together on our new big screen tv. I just loved it. I held onto the dvd so tight. Back in the day they use to release these thick deluxe versions of films. It was so cool. I then got into the books because everyone, and i mean EVERYONE, was reading them at school. I remember my neighbor Sadie bought me the 2nd book at Kmart and I read the heck out of it. I keep mentioning Kmart because Kmart was and still is the shit. Well, it's still the shit until they all close next year (i'm so sad about that). Anyways, I was so sad when the film series ended. I was so stoked when the Wizarding World returned with Newt Scamander and co. I became obsessed with Eddie Redmanye and Newt. I just loved the aesthetic and the feeling that I was being brought back to my childhood. This was in 2016, reboots were high on everybody's radar. I went to see Fantastic Beasts on opening weekend. It was a Saturday and it was storming. I remember I was flirting with this dude named Franco from Germany. He didn't even understand english half of the time, so that text fling didn't last. Anywho, I remember I kept telling him about the magic I felt returning to the realm of Harry Potter. This was at a time in my life where things were confusing. Considering I was just getting on my feet again with the whole world of Glaucoma that I lived in. It was nice to escape to the wizarding world and imagine myself holding a wand and going around town and making the wrongs right. One of the things I loved about Harry Potter, was he always fought for what is right. In the end he had his final battle and he won and made things better for everyone. That obviously changed when JK wrote my favorite book, the cursed child... (I LOVE THAT SCRIPT)... But regardless, Harry and co won their war. Harry showed us that good can and will trump hate. See what I did there... It was a confusing time when the first film released. We were all on the edge with what had just happened in this country. Now we are fighting back and prepping for a battle with Voldemort. I'm not trying to make this political, but you gotta admit, the world around us looks like the final battle in part 2 of the deathly hallows. I mean, it is literally burning all over the state at the moment. This is a time where we need a little magic to uplift our spirits and prepare us for what is to come. Last week was election day and now it's time escape for a moment before we prep for the hustle and bustle of Christmas. We need all the magic we can get so that we can feel these feelings we need to feel. We can't have the kids not feeling that wonder. I'm glad Newt can come back to our screens and bring along his fantastic beasts, so that way we can all fuel the magic in our hearts, regardless of what may be unfolding in the world around us.
